A few months back I watched a ladybird flit around a busy train on the Underground.Towards the end of my journey, it landed within arms reach, so I sought to grab it, stick it in my pocket and release it upside, back in reality.
As I quickly struck out, it flew off and I missed. The Chinese tourist standing next to me had also noticed the ladybird and was somewhat surprised by the lunge barely missing his nose. He didn't seem to comprehend my hapless shrug and "uh...ladybird..." murmur.
I wonder whether he thought of me as some boorish gweilo barbarian, out to smash an innocent creature, or whether he knew I was just trying to rescue it.
Or, perhaps, knowing that as a ladybird's back is "turned toward the sun" he respected my judgement in trying to cadge an opportune snack and felt a unity between out cultures.
After I'd left the train and was ascending the stairs to leave, I was happy to see the little bastard fly off my shoulder.
The ladybird that is, not the Chinese tourist.
