The latest episode of Radio Lab broached this very subject. The theory said there are only a finite number of combinations of elements and chemical reactions and so on in our universe. Assuming that the universe is infinite in size (as it, to our best knowledge, is continually expanding), there invariably will be repeats. So somewhere in our infinite universe, there is a locustsloth just like me typing this. In fact, there would be many instances of the doppleganger and many more slight variations (ones where i'm wearing my superman underoos, rather than my batman ones, perhaps). i've probably butchered it, so just go listen to it.
