  i agree with the rest of your points. But remember that a person's affinity for music often has little to do with the technical prowace or know-how of the musician. More often it's the emotion that the music elicits. You can be a technical master, producing multi-section, fully orchestrated masterpieces, but if non-musicians get lost or become disinterested half-way thru the song, who the fuck cares except other musicians? To say that Zappa was better strictly because his songs had more musical depth is short sighted at the least, if not downright elitist
