Overall I'm pretty rough on macs but one thing I do do is unplug it overnight just so that there's not power / heat cycling through the thing over night, when not in use, etc.
I also put one of those swiffer / dust-cloth things between the keyboard and the screen because after a while the screen gets imprints of the keys rubbed into the non-glare coating – though I think that the newer ones have better clearance. Still doesn't hurt and I delude myself into thinking that it helps trap some of that scary keyboard crap while being transported.
BACK UP YOUR DATA FREQUENTLY!! Drives are way more reliable nowadays but seriously, how much is your data worth to you? Get an external drive or a time-capsule and back the thing up. Drives fail over time, that's just the way it goes.
