if your work is good enough, the experience doesn't count as much anymore.. just go ahead and try.. walk in, ask for the right people, show your work, can't hurt right? you've got the "no" already, go for the "we'll be in touch for a second interview"..
don't be scared just go for it. and if you get turned down or refused you just learn from it.
