Russia has done its very best to provoke the situation, for sure, but I cant see what the Georgians hope to gain with this.....
First of all, South Ossetia is already part of Russia – ruble is their currency, russian textbooks are used in schools, etc, 90% of south-ossetians are russian citizens and as holders of russian passports, they are being given security guarantees....other than that the strategic resource is Georgia itself -- russians have to be consistent with their influence policy in the region, they are simply answering the attack, but they don't want this war. As I see it, the pro-american Saakashvili is desperate and seeks to provoke USA and get them involved:
