It all started way back in the olden days of yayhooray when they had a merit-based system of users, where users could give each other points for being smart, funny, useful, or for utter cuntyness. Eventually, the point system was abolished, but the convention remained firmly planted in the popular imagination, and since there is much cross-pollination between YH and here, it began leaking into threads here, too, where users wanted to express their approval and endorsement.
Why the QBN decided to add it to public choice and editors choice, i cannot fathom, because there is no merit system here and it doesn't seem to do a damn thing. But, i am not privy to the intricate workings of the wizards behind the curtain, so i cannot say for certain what it is good for.
