I have had both. I think that if you need to do a lot of work on the road, get the 17. You will appreciate the extra pixels. On the other hand, if you mostly work at a desk where you can use a second monitor, get the 15. It is more portable and more than fine if you just need to communicate, surf and do the occasional bit of work on the road. Just my opinion though.
As for waiting/not waiting... well there is always something new coming out with apple but the next one "should" be a whole new design. That is good and bad. The good is that there will be lots of new cool things about it but usually the first gen has some problems.
