Not sure who is telling you that architect's make a lot of money. With two degrees in architecture and most friends in the field I can assure you that they don't.
Technically, you are an 'intern' until licensed, which requires IDP (intern development program) points/hours, then 9 exams. This takes anywhere from about 3 - 10 years after graduation (from a professional school, meaning a master's or 5 year bach).
I personally left the profession (in a traditional sense) to start my own company (3D, web and graphic design). Let's just say I have no regrets.
