It all stems from the erroneous belief that one can "catch" these trolls, out them or otherwise put an end to their reign of annoying-ness. Like once they're found out they'll go "oh, you found me, i'll just give up now."
And some of it is the love of debate, the affinity for arguing a point. Trolls pick a hot button topic, which provides a stage for all those little opinions running around in our heads that are just dying to get out.
i am guilty of both these behaviors. Only the handing out of dismissals has kept me silent in the last day or so
