i think as more people come to terms with a fact that homosexuality is just another facet of life, the word will lose it's power (it won't disappear however). i know that in my experience, in high school and such, even being suspected of being homosexual was an opening for ridicule.
As people of my generation, and younger generations, teach their kids that homosexuality is an acceptable path in life, peer pressure may swing the other way, and those leveling the ridicule will be the ones who are ostracized.
