I moved from LA to NYC a couple years ago, and also with no job lined up. Thankfully, I found it easy to get in the freelance pool, but even then, paychecks take about a month to start rolling in. You should try to find an apartment asap though. Even if you do not currently have steady income, you can make a strong argument by showing last years income tax report, good credit check, and current bank statements (assuming you have a healthy amount saved). Finding someone who already has a place and needs a roommate via craigslist might be your best bet.

As for the people and the amount of shit luck you are going to go through in the first couple months, get used to it. It took me a little under a year to completely adapt to all those finer characteristics of this city, but once you do, it's a great place. Hang in there. Give it time.

I'm also available to meet for a coffee etc. and live in brooklyn/boerum hill near flatbush.
