stay out of Midtown then, stay below NYU area, Lower East Sidish, that might be more your cup of tea man. Unless you want to see ritzy then head up to UWS and UES. But for sure check out MOMA in Queens, like 15 minutes away from Midtown via Subway, (N and R lines, at least I think is was, might be 7 or E, F now).
