Lived there for an extended period of time, both in Queens and UESide. Chec out MOMA, now moved to Queens. All of the city parks are full of interesting artistic people. Upper East and West for some nice food. NYU area for people watching. More of the museums that align the Central Park. You could bounce way downtown to see the relics of the WTC. You could always do the touristy thing and stick around mid-town and Times Square. Tribeca, Alphabet City, Harlem, etc, etc, etc. So much to do, so little time. Pick up a copy of 'Time Out, NYC' at any newstand when you get there, will help you figure stuff out, but if you've never been there before most of the city is on a grid system.
