I can't help you with your upgrade questions but I can tell you about the 8500.
I got it about 2 months ago and frickin' love it! Haven't had any problems or regrets about buying it.
I went with 512 ram and the ATI Radeon 9000 because I'm more of a coder than graphic designer and I don't play any games.
