  A few year's ago, I was really pleased with a total package at Cafe des Artistes.

  It's old school French fine dining but the dining room is small and quiet. Come to think of it, it may not be ideal for four people but I'm passing along the praise anyway. It's roughly in the Lincoln Square area.

  Better bets for your occasion in term of amazing food:

  Gotham Bar & Grill
  Union Square Cafe

  Also for design (and prices) Four Seasons (not the hotel)
  interiors by Mies/P. Johnson

  (both in the Union Square/Gramercy area)
