before we left I emailed Mark Bittman to ask if he'd tried this restaurant called "wicked Oyster" in wellfleet this year. We've been passing it for years but never gave it a second thought because the names was so stupid. Last year after we got back there was a column in the Times in which Bittman said he'd had one of his best meals of the year there. But I figured its a year later, who knows if the chef is still there. In my letter I mentioned that we had heard he'd once stayed in the same cottage we were going to. Bittman never emailed me back. No surprise there--he must get millions of them. 2 nights ago we were eating fried clams at Mac's shack overlooking wellfleet harbor and who do we see but Mark Bittmann. My wife went up to him and asked if he'd been to Wicked Oyster yet this year and he said no, have you? He said he mostly cooks for himself and rarely eats out.
