there are a lot of things going on in skateboarding right now that i dont like, and its easy to point fingers at the bigger companies and blame them. However, they wouldnt exist if WE didnt buy them. Nike isnt killing skateboarding, skateboarders are.
And its not like Nike is the only giant in the industry, what about vans? theyve been around for a long time and get a lot of street cred, but are they not owned by a huge corporation? same with almost every shoe company in the industry. Even the "core" distributors like podium (DVS, Lakai) make bmx, motocross, surfing, blah blah blah shoes.
skateboarding is big money, and its pretty dumb to think companies with smart marketing people arent going to take a stab at it. But hey, at least they are supporting their team. They pay them well and fly them to the best spots in the world. Nike is also sponsoring skate events and giving (though its a fraction of what they make) back to the skate community. I say let the big companies come into skateboarding and pay us absurd amounts of money. Lets milk them while theyre here.
