I don't think it's a case of doing it right or wrong.
It might be because it involves doing work that doesn't encompass just the designer's point of view - ie. the client has a say, the CD and AD have a say, even the project manager has a say...
...plus i'd wager more people than we care to think about don't actually know what design is or think that design is putting pretty pictures on T-shirt's and making countless wallpapers.
