If you speak Portuguese you'll be able to understand most of Spanish accents and words, specially from Mexico and Spain, but only few Spanish speakers can understand Portuguese language. I dunno why that happen, but it is a fact. And also, Portuguese is hardest to learn than Spanish, English, Italian, French... well at least that's what most non-portuguese natives who learnt it, have told me around the world.
