Hey Greedo, you know what... I started writing out a "how to" in this very thread the last time you mentioned it. When it got to 15,000 words though I had to ask myself if the Blog thread was really able to withstand such a gross digression from its purpose, and also the upload time once I hit "broadcast" would have been about 6 hours.
Just look at the shapes. All straight lines, all naiive perspective like a child's drawing, but with a sort of isometric 3d depth to them. Draw the shapes you want in Illustrator. Fill them as solid shapes, no outline. Copy and paste each shape into Photoshop individually so each shape has its own layer in psd. get some heavily textured papers. Scan or photograph the textures. Open them in Photoshop, copy and 'paste-into' into each individual shape you pasted from illy. Now you have a new layer with the paper textues masked by the illy shapes you drew. For each layer, adjust levels, and pick a nice colour from you desired colour palette. Fill the layer with the colour with fill set to 'Multiply'.
To make the shapes seem a bit more hand made, fuck about a bit with the masks. Roughen the edges, do little hand smudges and then dodge and burn them back to crude hard 1bit edges. Just fuck about. There are a million ways to acheive that style of work. That's just one off the top of my head.
