i was reading the onion and laughing, even spitting pfffft, at some of their jokes and then began to cruise their for sale accessories and decided to buy the 'i'll never take this camping' water bottle for my mom. she and i share a very similar taste in humour and i thought she would appreciate it and we could share a laugh. instead, this is what happened and this pretty much encapsulates the manner in which i was raised.
she is going to costa rica for a couple of weeks and was shopping for a water bottle the night prior to receiving the shipment i sent her. she was at sports authority and wasn't pleased with any of the styles or materials or colors so she decided not to go with any of them, despite the fact that she is leaving soon and has a million things to do before she goes. she wanted the water bottle she had in her mind and was not going to relent until she had it.
the next day my package arrived, marked only with 'the onion' stamped as the sender. my name was left out entirely! and because the water bottle was the exact color, shape and material she had craved, she immediately assumed the universe listened to her desires and began to exclaim 'i'd also like to win the lottery' etc. etc. she called her best girlfriend and went on and on about how special she is and how there is a force in this world that looks out for her.
so i was speaking to her yesterday and asked if she got the water bottle and she says 'OH that was you?!' and proceeds to tell me her hilarious story. i laugh and say ha that's really fun and that i sent it to her b/c i thought she'd like to share the humor with me. 'oh. what does it say? oh yes. i see. i'll never take this camping.' she doesn't confirm that she thinks this is funny and she doesn't even thank me for sending it she just goes on and on about how interesting her life is.
bless her and her hearty belief in correlation causation.
