Waiting for my new license:
"Jim Bradley said the new high-tech licence will include security features that will make it more difficult to commit identity theft while hopefully satisfying the U.S Department of Homeland Security, which had expressed concern over using licences as passport equivalents.
The province began issuing the cards this week and is working with the federal government to get permission to encrypt citizenship data onto the enhanced ID's.
"While there was some reluctance early on from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, certainly every indication we get now is that they understand that if we can produce a secure document that they're satisfied with, it could be used in lieu of a passport," said Bradley.
He said he was working with the privacy commissioner on the matter and only border officials would be able to see encrypted citizenship information on the new cards.
If the citizenship data is included, the requirements to get the enhanced ID's will also be tightened though the details are still be worked through, said Bradley.
The new cards include a laser engraved photo and personal information, a 2D barcode, micro printing, a secondary photo and ultra violet features."
