Your from the states Engage. Gerning is a European activity I believe, it basically means pulling a stupid face, there are gerning competitions every year.
the expression was brought into a modern context by the explosion of the recreational drug ecstacy, ravers experiencing a 'rush' of ecstasy were prone to pulling facial expressions likended to gerning.
As you can see I too much time on my hands today....
