Kerning is too important to a designer to 'not learn it'. There's nothing frustrates me more than to see a badly kerned block of text or type, improper use of quote marks, hyphens instead om en and em dashes, tabular figures in blocks of text... sorry, maybe it's just me but a lack of basic typographic skills just goes to show how lazy some designers are.
Better step down from my soapbox...
