To everyone that have some calibration issues, read this list to make sure you did it right. :D
1. Starting running and reach you pace before you get to the start of the calibration run - that way your total 'lap' will be at the same pace
2. Maintain the pace that you will be running at throughout the calibration
3. Run naturally and unencumbered; i.e. backpack, unless you will be running with a backpack, for example if you are in the military
4. Use a 400m running track if you can and run on the inside lap
5. If you can’t use a track, try a (American)football field, (they measure 100 x 53), stand on the goal line, run one lap (306yds), one width (53yrds) and then to the 41 yard line (303 + 53 + 41 = 400), not ideal but better than just guessing
6. If you are using the street make sure the measured distance is flat: ups and downs will effect your pace and subsequently the calibration
7. Make sure you sensor is the right way up; with the logo face up
8. Reset the calibration (from the Nike+ iPod menu) before calibrating – this is voodoo, but who knows
9. Your sensor works best when it is horizontal, close to the ground, and held firmly in position, Nike+ shoes are best, probably followed by the Velco pouch/mount option on the laces.
10. Try to avoid calibrating on a treadmill, for lots of reasons this is not a good idea and will often only end in frustration
11. Remember if you are running faster or slower than the pace you have calibrated at, the results will vary, if you want to run a Long Slow Run at a 8:30 pace a 6:15 5k calibration will not work and visa versa, recalibrating for the correct pace will save you time energy and keep your frustration to a minimum
12. If you really mix up your runs, buy a second or third sensor, now available for $19 (₤10?) on their own and have them calibrated a varying paces
13. If you walk when in a ‘run’ calibration your overall pace will decrease and vice versa if you run when in walk pace
14. It is advisable to calibrate both run and walk settings if you plan to include walking as a part of you training
15. Hold you iPod in your hand when you calibrate, fumbling with cases and armbands while running is not easy at the best of times, yet alone when calibrating
16. Not a tip but often overlooked, your calibrating mileage does not count, it will not show up when you upload to you account or in any of the challenges; still want to run a 5k calibration?
17. If you are getting frustrated with the calibration, throw your iPod down and jump on it several times, ensure that it is level with the ground and that the logo is face up, retrieve it from the dirt, write something derogatory on it and send to either Steve Jobs or Phil Knight. Seriously if it’s going bad, trying to do it over and over will just drive you nuts. Put it away, go for a run and try again tomorrow- forget it. I won't read all that.
