Though I didn't compose the press release, I don't see anything strange about the sentence. The phrase "Hecht says" is a standard use of the literary present tense (as in, for example, "Shakespeare writes...") and Hecht's appraisal itself seems straightforward and accurate, written in 1998 or 1999, when Fairchild's book came out.
