People love to cry wolf. Especially Merill Lynch. If you go back and look closely at their track record, you will see that they are not terribly accurate at forecasting. As for Apple going down the crapper, its not going to happen. The more important thing that people fail to realize is the ease of use of the hardware, and that lures people to use it. For most of the ‘normal’ people out there, they want to check email, burn cds, surf the web, and play with their digital cameras. For these uses, the Apple products are a better fit than most of the windows solutions out there. Market share is a terribly misleading thing for you to base your sole opinion on that they will fail. Microsoft does not make computers, Gateway, Dell, Compaq and others do, and last I checked Apple was #2 in hardware sales, behind Dell. The retail stores are working, and constantly packed. People are noticing. They are working on solidifying their 3 core audiences: Switchers, The Arts, and Education, and slowly people will come around.

Apple is and always will be a cult brand. Same with BMW, and Harley Davidson. While Honda makes cheaper and more reliable products, none have the same features, lust factor, and following as BMW and Harley do. The same goes for Apple. This factor ALONE will keep them in business. Add to the fact that their products are more stable, easier to use, better quality and far more innovative means that people will still buy them. How many people have ipods now? How many people are drooling over the new PowerBooks? A lot. Gil Amelio damn near killed Apple, the stuff they made in the mid 90’s was GARBAGE and expensive. Apple is slowly working to undo those mistakes. The next thing they need to do is get someone to provide them with some faster processors, and then the Wintel market will begin to cower in fear...that’s the one thing missing from the equation, and probably the hardest thing to accomplish, but it will happen.

And no, they are not charging for the iApp updates, only iDVD, and that’s because its a giant download. Pay attention!
