The abstract for Vanadium is all in the colors. V has valence states of +2; +3; +4; +5. Compounds of vanadium in each of these states has a characteristic color:
    +2 = violet
    +3 = green
    +4 = black
    +5 = yellow/yellow orange

Sum the states and you get 14 - an octahedron has eight faces and six vertices vor a total of 14. The four faces on the back side are not visible and represent black.

Chromium has valence states of +2; +3; +6. The billard balls are correspondingly colored. The cue ball reprents the metal, and hexavalent chrome (+6) is extremely toxic.

    Cheers,
