  sherman, why should i use php? Both technologies are good; asp.net has native code and presentayion separation, you can separate code in php using smarty;

  to voiceof:
  tell your developer to use asp:Repeater control instead of datalist; datalist renders table as output, repeater repeats everything what you want;
