in this case its photoshop's rubbish anti aliasing for text, most likely the font isn't designed for screen use exactly. Playing with the aliasing setting might help a bit but its pretty unavoidable in my experience. If you're using flash you might get the same stuff, its got quite crappy aliasing too.
Browser font smoothing works a totally different way (take a screen grab of smoothed html text in a browser, zoom in and look at the pretty colours, compared to the mush of PS), one reason I'd only use graphics/swiffer text for headings and a websafe font for any copy.
ps. I like the site mat, but agree with the above copy, though I think if the text isn't quite lined up to the top but slightly off you'll keep the nice off centre thing your looking for without producing the same confusion. :)
