Eurail pass doesn't actually mean that you can hop on any train without any problems. Pretty much all of the trains require booking (and there are usually booking fees).
But the passes are good. I had a 2 month one a couple of years back. It cost me more than my return flight to London (which isn't cheap from Australia). But it is a lot cheaper than if you were going to get the tickets all separately.
If you are staying in hostels then www.gomio.com was the best for booking places. hostelbookers.com etc all charged huge fees.
- there are flexipasses though, where you pick the travel days and can take any train on those daysacescence
