It's such a horrible, horrible tragedy, but one thing I'm constantly thinking about is just how different parts of the world like this are from others. We probably have better information than 99% of the survivors do there. I bet there are towns and villages that have still not grasped the full effects of this - that 100,000 people have likely died.
Communication, methods of communication, those things are fascinating to me. We are so wrapped up these days in the Internet, cell phones, digital things, etc. that by default I think we take it for granted now. I read something recently about how a ship had to travel at full speed sailing for 9 to 12 days to cross the Atlantic to give word that Lincoln was assassinated.
I know this isn't necessarily the right thread for that discussion, but it's really sad to think about the total and complete disconnect and sense of unknowing and despair that people there are going through.
- I agree 100% I heard about the london bombing probably half an hour after they happened through newstoday.slappy
- But do you honestly think any of us have actually grasped the death of 100k people? Or is it just a fleeting speck of knowledge...ismith
- knowledge?ismith
- I mean, sure it's so easy now for us to realize these events, but they really have such a small personal affect...ismith
- Hasnt had the media coverage here so it hasnt hit home that hard. Unlike 9-11 where everyone stopped what they were doing and watched in aweslappy
- ...were doing and watched in aweslappy
- this is 2.5x the size of Sri-Lanka
I dont think people realize how big this is yet******** - if 100,000 people have died, then that's over 30 9/11s, maybe that will put it in perspectiveBaskerviIle
