I found $18,000 once. No joke - I worked at a grocery store in high school, and by the ATM I noticed a canvas bag, opened it up, and just saw stacks of cash. The bank was closed, no ATM truck around, nothing.
Told the store manager, they told me the next day that there was about $18K and it had apparently been mistakenly left behind after a delivery or something. There was nothing preventing anyone from leaving with it.
My mom was pretty disappointed, however, that I never received any official thank you from the bank. It was Bank of America for crying out loud. No letter thanking me, nothing. I was a bit disappointed as well but I had a new girlfriend at the time and money was the last thing on my mind.
