having dated girls 8 years older and 10 years younger (yes girls my own age too!) i think it only appears as a potential issue until you experience it yourself.
in the end it's really down to who you're dating, there are people much older/younger that are a perfect match at a given time, and people your own age that are complete retards.. kind of like family vs strangers..
