I take a bottle of Makers Mark, drink like 5 shots, then add simple syrup and steeped mint leaves to fill the bottle back up and I throw it in the freezer for a few weeks. Then still prepare the julep as you would but you have steeped mint inside of the bourbon as well. That is my up north way of doing it. probably blasphemy to some, but they are incredible on a 90 degree day.
