I haven't eaten meat for 18 years and I have no interest in eating it again, I just don't see it as food. Of course in a survival situation I'd have no qualms about cannibalism, or hunting things and eating them, but you do what you have to to survive, obviously..
To my mind, once we developed our brains sufficiently to be able to plan and farm crops as opposed to hunting/gathering, then vegetables (and maybe fish) became our ideal diet, yet we retained the ability to digest meat in case crops failed or we found ourselves otherwise unable to survive without it.
There are many good reasons not to eat meat, one trendy one being that overall it is terrible for the environment, globally and locally in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, water usage and pollution of water tables etc, as well as the old adage of it taking 10 times the biomass to create one gram of bioprotein from meat vs. plant sources.
Vegetarians who eat a balanced diet live longer, more active, healthier lives and make less impact on the environment. Overall it's just a more responsible way to live in a shrinking world, and as such gives you some leaway to argue against things like personal fossil fuel consumption and not having to use those fucking twirly neon energy-saving lightbulbs in your child's bedroom, cause they contain fucking mercury! Mercury! Save the planet - expose your kid to mercury if they accidently break a light-bulb.
Fuck that. I don't drive a car, I don't eat meat, I'm doing more than 95% of people for the environment, you can twist your fucking mercury lightbulbs up your enviro-nazi backsides, Im having a thin wire that I heat up with electricity, and I always will.
