Do you smoke, bolus? If so, you might want to spend a couple of hours taking your machine apart and cleaning out the insides - I did this recently with the Vaio I'm writing this on and now it sounds a lot quieter.
Unless, of course, it's a harddisk problem - in which case, take the machine apart and swap out the harddisk...
