With regards to designers and creatives, I've never seen the merit in buying all-in-ones - you'll inevitably (as your dilemma illustrates) have to make a compromise somewhere - and what when one component wears out? Scanners and printers are the two perpheral devices that tend to wear out relatively fast, so it (in my mind) represents an entirely false economy. Don't even get me started on the multicolour ink blocks you'll probably need to buy.
A decent enough scanner is under a 100 bucks, and from there you can make an appropriate printer choice, so why not?
