not really.. if your searching for a specific area.
i searched for ones in the LA area and I didnt get a few thousand. Maybe 40?
The firmlist is good. Thats how everyone finds design firms.. from finding links and researching a little.
You can also look at http://linkdup.com and search for "design firm" and you can see design firms with really cool web sites. But, design firms sometimes dont have really wicked websites and let their work speak for itself. DNA and 65media don't have impressive sites but have really impressive work. SO, always look at the portfolio.
