Hasn't "cotton picking" moved past any reference to slavery. I understand it's where the term originated and in racially sensitive discussions it's not bright to use it (when every word is going to be analyzed for deeper meaning). I lived in Montgomery, Ala for many years and that term was used across the board black and white (assuming they were over 45 or so). Just seems like a small gaffe to try and make something out of; I'm sure he's said some other things that were more worthy of taking issues with.
