just had this happen 4 weeks ago, i JUST got my xbox back last night. the 'ring of death' as it's called. call xbox. they are well aware of the problem. once you're on the phone with the guy he's going to make you run through a checklist of things. remove the hd. turn it on. now test the power supply, remove the plugs, put them back in, turn it on. what's the color of the light on the power strip? once you go through all the bullshit they'll tell you it's a hardware failure. no worries. you're covered for 3 years now even if you DIDN'T ever send back in the warranty card or register the machine. mine was over a year old and i never registered it. the guy did it over the phone no problems.
they'll send you a box via ups. package it up EXACTLY following the instructions. tape the number they give you to the side of your xbox. take it to ups and everything is prepaid. in 3 weeks you get a brand new xbox back.
mine had a big superman sticker on the side, it was gone and also before i sent it i put a small black dot in the lower corner of each panel and there were no dots on any of them. it's a brand new box.
yay. don't worry. the worst part is not having it for 3 weeks. good luck.
