Yeah, it's happened to me...twice. First time I sent it back to MS and didn't get a box back for almost a month. My problem was that I bought my 360 off some random dude so I didn't have a warranty or receipt. So here's what I did.
Call your local Best Buy or go in and talk to someone. Find a cute chick, a cool dude, whatever. Ask them some q's and work in the XBOX and then mention the rings. Tell them you got the 360 as a gift for Xmas but whoever got it for you didn't buy the warranty. Tell them you'd like to purchase it. It's like $50. You can get it for 2 years. I did, and anytime it acts up, gets the red lights, anything, you can take it back for a new one. Better yet, if newer versions of the 360 have come out since you bought it, you'll automatically get the new one. I had a first gen box and now mind is upgraded (I think HDMI was added or something). It's worth the money and saves a ton of headaches.
