Because one God made everything, one God can die and save all of those he created. This was a hard concept for me to grasp for many years: the idea that one person could pay penance for the mistakes of everyone ever born. Again, this is only possible because Jesus is/was God in the flesh, meaning he was perfect but human at the same time – the only perfect human ever to exist.
