I think Desmond and Penny's relationship signifies hope more than anything else. While I totally don't go for the cheesy romantic relationships on the show, at least it isn't just about the relationships of couples, as many other shows have transformed into. We get that kick-ass fighting and/or treachery and/or "people hurting" stuff nearly every day, so I appreciated the slight change.
Sayid killing people was definitely a great episode, but I don't want the show catering to just one type of viewer. I would've been out a long time ago if that was the case.
