I kinda like it. I can see how the navigation competes with the text, or vice versa.
What I like:
Different navigation = good, as long as those squares on the left are all huge rollovers, if not, it may be confusing
Colors = nice. I like the feel of the left side
Didn't like:
The left side. It looks kind of cheap, for lack of better words. It makes the left side look less substantial. Kind of like a nice site with no content.
I would not scrap it. Keep the idea of the left side, work with a heirarchy of Nav #1, boring text #2.
