From what I hear that is a good book. Although you can see where you used it, it didn't help much they way it was intended to.
It isn't about just slapping some guides up their and designing to the guides.
You have to give people a visual path on where to go and how to get there.
I wouldn't say scrap the idea. I would just suggest making the site a bit easier to look at and use.
I am glad to see you are not using a conventianal nav system, but don't kill it by making it too hard to use.
Just think of how people read things and what people tend to look for first. In some cases it is the navigation but in most it is the name of the company. Then nav... then everything else in it's respective order. Open up. Go outside and breath for a min.
I did an exersise once that made me go to the park and study how people react to certain elements. Kids mostly. I drew a grid of the play area and dropped in all of the things the kids could play with. Then noted which the kids went to first and so on. It was a bitch to keep track but good to see what people react to more. You will notice how color makes a big difference and the use of negative space between sections can help.
Just think of the suits that will view the site. Sucks but sometimes you have to mix the 2 together...
keep trying
