Google Apps:
You get a range of gmail accounts for users from your organization (company, school class, family, etc.) and hook up your own domain (or more domains) to them. Basically, it's @yourowndomain rather than @gmail.com
Something like up to 99 or 100 accounts are free. All that comes with google calendar, desktop, docs and whatnot - all these including contacts can be shared within organisation.
Downsides:
- you cannot blend such email account with your current gmail one.
- google owns you (like it doesn't so far)
