    Google Apps:
    You get a range of gmail accounts for users from your organization (company, school class, family, etc.) and hook up your own domain (or more domains) to them. Basically, it's @yourowndomain rather than @gmail.com
    Something like up to 99 or 100 accounts are free.

    All that comes with google calendar, desktop, docs and whatnot - all these including contacts can be shared within organisation.

    Downsides:
    - you cannot blend such email account with your current gmail one.
    - google owns you (like it doesn't so far)
