Affordable is hard to come by in the Bay these days especially if you want to live in the city proper. The most affordable stuff is likely in the Sunset or Richmond districts in SF, but at that point it might be worth looking in the East Bay, Oakland and Berkeley. Are you guys looking to rent or buy? My wife and I live in Berkeley now and my commute is into the city, easy on BART. Since you are commuting down the peninsula, a neighborhood like Portrero Hill would be ideal. As far as groceries on the cheap a combination of Farmers Markets, Trader Joe's and Safeway is the way to go.
