the widest you can get for that is a 10-22. This lens only for crop sensor cameras. So if you ever want to upgrade to a 5D or whatever canon releases that is full frame, it will not work. Ill stick with the 17-40, future proof your investment.
The 50mm is like $350. I love my lens. I say just save and buy it.
